The idyllic, pastoral scenery of Constantia with its rolling hills, laden grapevines and gorgeous gabled homesteads offer a uniquely rural aspect to this suburb. Despite all evidence to the contrary Constantia is deceptively close to the bustling centre of Cape Town, a mere 15 minutes drive away. The region is large enough to support its own wine route and as such offers an alternative to wine lovers who haven’t the time to drive through to Stellenbosch or Franshoek. The best known estate is undoubtedly Groot Constantia, once the home of the first Governor to the Cape, Simon van der Stel. Today you can enjoy visiting the farm, wine tasting in the cellars and picnicking in the grounds or eating at the excellent on-site restaurant, Simons.
Other wine estates on the route include Klein Constantia, founded in 1716 and Buitenverwachting, home to one of the most exclusive restaurants in Cape Town. The final estate along the route is Steenberg, which has an 18-hole golf course, hotel and restaurant. Constantia Village Shopping Centre is a charming local mall with boutiques, specialty shops and restaurants and delis aplenty.
