In October the Cableway celebrates its 80th birthday and invites you to join in the celebrations. On the 4th of October 1929 the Cableway opened its doors to the public. For years locals and tourists alike have enjoyed the brief yet exhilarating trip up to the top of the mountain, and to celebrate eight decades of service to the public, the Cableway is extending its popular Family Winter Special. This special allows two children under the age of 18 to ride for free with one full-paying adult.

This extended special is just in time for the spring school holiday, and is valid every day from 24 September until 4 October 2009, and continues on weekends and public holidays until Saturday 31 October 2009. The CEO of the Cableway Company, Sabine Lehmann, had the following to say: "We have extended this popular special so that every member of the family can join us in celebrating our 80th birthday this year."

And with an invitation like that how can you resist? Once atop this magnificent icon be sure to take a walk across and along the plateau, so that you can enjoy every possible view. On clear days you can see over the City Bowl and across Table Bay and Robben Island to the sand dunes at Atlantis, a whopping 40km away! In the other direction you can see Lion's Head; Clifton, Camps Bay and Bakoven beaches; and along the Twelve Apostles mountain range to Cape Point. Walk to the end of the plateau for an alternate view of Devil's Peak and marvel at just how spread out the city of Cape Town really is.

Then venture into the Table Mountain Cafe where you and the kids can enjoy a selection of hamburgers, pizzas, and salads among other fare. If you are lucky enough to get a window seat you will have the rare opportunity of enjoying your meal with one of the best views in the world laid out before you. Peruse the Shop at the Top and take home a memento of your time atop Table Mountain. Then step into the cable car and prepare yourself for the last of these amazing views during your descent.

Family Winter Special: This allows two children under 18 to ride free with one full-paying adult, at the special price of R145.00 (normal child rate is R76.00) until 30 September 2009. Due to the annual rate increase, the price of an adult ticket will increase to R160.00. Please note that the Family Winter Special applies to return fares only.
