Description

The West Coast climate is all about extremes. It runs along the icy Atlantic Ocean where whales and dolphins play in season. The region is best known for the unsurpassed beauty of its floral displays in spring (August and September) when colours carpet the landscape with daisies and other endemic flora in full bloom.

The Langebaan Lagoon and West Coast National Park are popular spots we recommend you take time to explore. For culture enthusiasts, Velddrif, with its artists' colony and bokkoms (dried fish) industry, on the banks of the Berg River, is a fascinating place to visit. You can also take a boat ride if the mood takes you.

The wetlands of Velorenvlei and Rochepan, 30 minutes out of Velddrif, are a bird lover's paradise - watch and marvel at myriad of water birds that live and visit this area. A slow ride over Pakhuis Pass sets you back in the direction of Cape Town.

On a Sunday, a great option is to stop for a typical Afrikaans home-cooked lunch at the old railway station of Darling. After the meal, enjoy a live show at "Evita Se Perron", an intimate theatre of South Africa's most famous stand-up comedian Pieter-Dirk Uys. You may well want to overnight up the West Coast. We recommend Paternoster which has some gorgeous beach-side accommodation.
