CAPE TOWN ROBBEN ISLAND

Robben IslandRobben Island, a small piece of land just off the Cape coast, has a dark and complex history. For many years it was used as a place to house the ‘outcasts’ of society - from the mentally ill to political prisoners. Most famous of the latter is South Africa’s much loved Madiba, ex-President Nelson Mandela. Many other heroes of ‘the struggle’ against the apartheid government were incarcerated on the island during those years.

Since 1997 Robben Island has gone from being a place avoided by most, to one visited by thousands every year. It is home to the Robben Island Living Museum and is being developed as a National Heritage and conservation project, while the symbolism of the island is maintained.

Robben Island Tours are run regularly each day from the V&A Waterfront. During the 3 to 4 hour excursion visitors are taken through the now empty high security prisons where they can visit Mandela’s cell and meet one of the ex-prisoners.

The visit is unique and memorable, offering a unique perspective on the apartheid era as well as stunning views across the Bay to Table Mountain.

Ferries leave at regular intervals throughout the day from the Clock Tower precinct at the Waterfront, and you are strongly advised to book well in advance to avoid disappointment.
