View photos and learn more about whale watching in Cape Town.

Description

The Southern tip of Africa is well known as being frequented by Southern Right whales, the largest mammal on earth. Whale watching in Cape Town is one of the best ways to spend a day out on the Peninsula. However, how can you be guaranteed to see a whale in the vast oceans surrounding Cape Town? The answer is that you cannot be guaranteed to see one, not when dealing with free animals. However, many of the Cape Town tours offer cheap, safe and non-intrusive trips to get "up close and personal" with these enormous, magnificent creatures of the sea.

From July to December, the whales tend to frequent the shores of South Africa more often. Most common in South African waters are the Southern Right Whales. The name originated when these creatures were hunted extensively and were the 'right' whales for hunting. Thankfully,...More details

Thankfully, whale hunting is now banned in the waters of South Africa, enticing the whales back into our waters.

Location:

The best places to see whales tend to be from cliffs which drop steadfastly into the oceans below. Old Boyes Drive from Muizenberg to Fish Hoek (False Bay), Cape Point (where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet), Chapman's Peak (Hout Bay) and the further a field to Hermanus and Cape Aghullus are excellent viewing spots for whales. Once you have decided that the lump in the ocean is indeed a living animal and not an island (as the mammals are sometimes mistaken for), then you should whip out your binoculars and settle to watch the whales frolicking in the bay. Every year Hermanus holds the Moby Dick festival, celebrating all things Whale.

If you would like to get up close to these mammals, we recommend taking a boat trip out to see them with a recommended tour operator. The tours leave from various points across the southern coastline. Plettenberg Bay, Hermanus, Cape Aghullus and the V&A Waterfront are the best places to locate a great whale watching tour in the Cape.

Features:

Most tours run over a few days, taking guests to and from their accommodation or using a luxury yacht to accommodate the guests on the ocean waves. Be sure to pick a tour with a knowledgeable guide so that any quests you may have are easily answered.
