Cultural Tour PLUS Robben Island
For a fascinating perspective on the history of the Western Cape and South Africa, join us on a tour that incorporates visits to many of the informal settlements, cultural museums and a memorable boat trip out to Robben Island.
The Tour
The morning of the tour we visit a number of townships around Cape Town.
Highlights include:
- The District Six Museum – a fascinating insight into the tragic history of forced removals
- The Guga S’Thebe Arts & Culture Centre in Langa
- Meeting a Traditional Healer
An optional visit to a Shebeen (informal pub) where you can partake of a drink with the locals
- On a more somber note, visits to the Gugulethu Seven Memorial and the Amy Biehl Memorial
- Visiting a local B&B in Khayelitsha
- All these experiences will give you opportunity to connect with members of the local communities which is a truly enriching experience.
Next we will head for the V&A Waterfront from where the boat to Robben Island is launched. On this part of the tour your guide on the island will be an ex-inmate of the prison renowned for being the place where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for so many years prior to his dramatic release and subsequent heading up of the country. You will feel part of this magical story as you stand at the doorway of the tiny prison cell where the great man once lived, wrote and planned for the day of freedom.
While many other experiences of Cape Town are filled with fun, shopping, dining out and enjoying the beautiful countryside, this is the one day that will remain clear in your mind long after the others have merged into one fun-filled holiday memory. |
