Cultural Township Tour
There are many tours available that offer to take you into the informal settlements around Cape Town. Most will only offer one visit to one location, but Cape Town has a diverse cultural heritage and such a tour, while interesting, will not give a broad spectrum of different faces and facets of our community.
The Tour
Through Book Cape Town you can enjoy and learn far more about the local blend of cultures.
Our tour starts with a visit to District Six, a neighbourhood with an intense history of displacement, upheaval and renewal. You will have the opportunity to learn more at the wonderful District Six Museum (closed on Sundays).
From this largely (though not exclusively) Muslim area you will be taken to the township of Langa, where you will visit the Guga S’Thebe Arts & Culture Centre. You will also have the chance to meet a Traditional Healer, and have the option to partake of some liquid refreshment with the locals at a Shebeen – an informal pub.
Next we head for the traditionally “Coloured” Bonteheuwel on the Cape Flats and then to Gugulethu, a massive, sprawling settlement where we will stop at the Gugulethu Seven Memorial and the well-known Amy Biehl Memorial.
Other townships that feature in our tour are Nyanga, Crossroads and Khayelitsha where we will stop at a local B&B.
The aspect of our tour that most of our clientele appreciate and comment on time and again is the interaction they are able to enjoy with the local community at each location. You will find the people welcoming and as interested in you as you are in them.
Apart from becoming educated about another side of Cape Town, you will also be contributing to the economy by enabling local businesses to survive and thrive thanks to tourism. |
