Footsteps to Freedom Walking Tour
This free, guided tour of the Mother City is a fascinating introduction to the history of Cape Town and well worth including in your itinerary.
If you wish to join a tour, meet at the official Cape Town Tourism Office, located on the corner of Burg and Castle Streets, at 10.30 am (every day except Sundays and certain public holidays).
The tour incorporates visits to some of the most significant historic sites and attractions in the CBD. These include the bustling Greenmarket Square and Grand Parade, The Castle of Good Hope, the City Hall, District Six Museum, and various other gardens, cathedrals and buildings of interest.
The guides are well-schooled in presenting the dramatic history of Cape Town through story telling, using the city and the sites as backdrop for their fascinating tale. This is a great way to learn and remember facts about the Cape.
Among other things you will learn how Africa, Asia and Europe all contributed to the creation of the city. You will be able to see with how the inner city is undergoing an incredible transformation right before your eyes, while hearing about the checkered past that has shaped its development – both positively and negatively.
The walk ends back at its starting point at around 1.30 pm.
The pace is leisurely and the walk easy and suitable for all ages, plus it is wheelchair friendly. However do be prepared for a good three hours of walking. The tour goes ahead in all weather conditions so bring appropriate attire and don’t forget comfortable shoes and drinking water!
