CAPE TOWN HIKING - CEDERBERG TREK

Mention the Cederberg to any local climbing and mountaineering enthusiast and be prepared for rapturous revues. This mountain range, situated between the towns of Citrusdal, Clanwilliam and Ceres, covers approximately 130 000 hectares of rugged terrain, much of it located in the protected Cederberg Wilderness Area.

Cedar Trees, unusual rock formations and caves featuring San rock art, plus the impressive high peaks of the range, make this a unique and enchanting paradise. Add sparkling, pure rivers and pools and varied fauna and flora and you can’t surpass the beauty of the Cederberg.

Book Cape Town has a fantastic 5-Day Southern Cederberg Traverse that will expose you to parts of this range you would be unlikely to discover safely alone.

We can also custom-make a package tour to include Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Zip-line, Pool Jumping and Hiking.
.
The Southern Cederberg Traverse (duration: 5 days)

This 5-day journey is a true wilderness mountaineering experience, requiring average fitness at minimum. You also need to be prepared for rock scrambling along the way. The two highest peaks in the Cederberg Range will be encountered and in winter the weather can be exceptionally cold, icy and sometimes it snows. Do not attempt this tour unless you are physically and mentally prepared to be challenged!

Day One
After heading out of Cape Town early and arriving in the Wilderness Area by late morning we immediately set off, hiking up to the Sneeuberg Hut via the Maltese Cross. This is where we will spend the first night.

Day Two
This day sees us hiking to the top of the Sneeuberg and climbing to the summit to reach the highest pinnacle of the entire Cederberg Range. At 2026m the views are unparalleled and make the effort well worth it. On a clear day the vista extends over 300km to Table Mountain.  On the way back to the hut, where the second night will be spent, we can take in a great view of Tafelberg, our next objective.

Day Three
Today we hike down a historical pass en route to the Welbedacht Forrest Station. The route follows a sparkling mountain stream. The night is spent in Welbedacht Cave.

Day Four
Leaving the cave, and crossing a shale band know as Die Trap, we ascend to Spout Cave. Here we leave out packs and enjoy a scramble to the Tafelberg summit, 1968m in height. We spend time exploring a myriad of fascinating rock formations, including the famous “flying saucer”. A great photo-op with spectacular views in every direction. The night passes in the cave.

Day Five
It’s all downhill today as we pass back via Welbedacht Cave. We return to Cape Town for the afternoon, with memories and photographs to share and treasure.
