The Western Cape is a dream location for anglers.
Book Cape Town has a very special destination for freshwater fishing enthusiasts, just on an hour’s drive from the center of Cape Town.
A pleasurable drive through the picturesque Winelands towns of Paarl and Franschhoek will take you to the cool, crystal clear freestone trout streams which flow out of rugged mountains situated between Cape Town, Worcester and Ceres.
Gushing and tumbling like nature’s own champagne along long kloofs and through deep valleys, these streams reflect the magnificent mountain peaks, which tower above in their tranquil pools, which collect here and there.
The streams are generously populated with wild rainbow and brown trout, as well as several smaller indigenous fish including some rare species.
Trout were introduced into these waters more than 100 years ago, and have survived and bred in the wild ever since. They may not be especially large, but they are eager to feed off the surface, making these incredibly clear streams a dry fly fisherman’s utopia.
The region experiences low, clear water levels during the summer trout season (September to May), as the rains fall in the winter months.
The generally steep gradient makes for fast-flowing waters.
The area comprises six dramatically varying rivers, and are all governed by a strict catch-and-release policy.
Along the riverbanks are a combination of local fynbos and alien invader plants.
It is not uncommon to glimpse wild buck, small deer, baboons, monkeys and bird life, while fishing.
Spending a day fishing these pristine Cape streams is as rewarding for the beauty of the surroundings as it is for the fishing itself!
The fishing takes place across a number of conditions - mostly in pocket water, but also in long pools, riffles and runs – especially on some of the bigger rivers.
Be prepared for a unique and challenging fishing experience. You’ll be required to use a stealthy approach for the best chance of success.
We use small dry flies and tiny nymphs fished on super light rods, long leaders and hair thin tippets. These are intricate streams and require skill and very specific equipment!
We have found that established dry fly patterns such as RAB, parachute Adams, small black mayfly imitations and attractor patterns such as Humpy’s and Kaufman’s Stimulators work well, as do tiny low floating caddis imitations like Goddard’s caddis and Elk-hair Caddis.
Nymphs that produce well are small weighted patterns such as Hare’s Ears, Pheasant Tails, Flashbacks and Zaks – tied on hooks ranging from size 18 – 24.
As you can appreciate, these tiny flies, super light tippets and delicate presentations make the Cape Streams fishing experience especially appealing to the fly fishing “purist”, providing a welcome challenge to even the most experienced angler! |
